Am I pregnant, How?!

If......
you are married,
you don't have family planning,
your previous periods were regular,
you have recent (< 2 months) unprotected sexual intercourse

Now if......
you have backache,
you have breast tenderness,
you have nausea, headache,
you have constipation, diarrhea, cramping,
you have spotting, increased vaginal discharge

And now if......
you miss your period more than 5 weeks

Then...

There is a possibility of pregnancy, we would usually recommend

1. Urine Pregnancy Test (UPT)
2. Ultrasound scan

to confirm a successful intrauterine pregnancy.

Sometimes even when we have a strong positive result from UPT, it is always good idea to proceed with ultrasound scanning in order to further confirm the pregnancy and the location of the embryo, if it is inside or outside the uterus.

It is important that to note that the gestational sac (GS) is located inside the uterus. If the embryo (baby) was located outside the uterus, then we call it Ectopic Pregnancy, and you are recommended to see your O&G doctor for further consultant and if the embryo was implanted somewhere else from the inner lining of the uterus, then surgery is usually required to remove it.

If it is a successful pregnancy, under ultrasound, it should appear like this:

The entire dark area at the centre is what we called gestational sac, GS and the ring-like structure is called yolk sac. It is still too early to see any organ of baby at this stage, the first organ formed for baby is heart and thus it is recommended for another scan at 6-8 weeks pregnancy to note for the heart beat.

So have you done your scan today? You may be interested in what's going to happen during 6-8 week pregnancy, let's continue reading!! =)
